A bitter row that is now spiraling out of control in the Pentecostal Churches in Uganda has exposed some of the most sinister and criminal activities, including homosexuality which go on in some of the churches.
Other revelations include new and lucrative brand of the prosperity pospel now sweeping major churches. The row, pitting the pastors who own churches on one side and those who lead ministries, but without churches on the other, has led to the pastors trading accusations and making shocking revelations about each other.
In a damning long letter dated November 20, 2006, Mr. Moses Solomon Male, evangelist and executive director the Arisng for Christ (ARCH), made a scathing attack on leading city pastor Dr. Joseph Sserwadda of Victory Church in Ndeeba on the South West outskirts of central Kampala. Mal accuses Sserwadda not only of waging war against ministries, but also of covering up the pastors who continue to commit evil, break the law and ruin families.
The long letter copied to Red Pepper, alleges that Pastor Sserwadda is not only aware of the many 'devilish' pastors around town and in the country, but he has on some occasions knowingly avoided condemning and stopping these pastors. Some of the revelations in Male's long letter are the following:
1. That the umbrella organization of Born Again Pentecostal Churches (NFBAPC) has been turned into a den of thieves and robbers, manipulators, women and men snatchers, marriage wreckers, liars, occultists, sodomites and hypocrites.
2. That the churcehes are extorting from the poor and the rich who are told to pay for everything, from deliverance to prosperity and heaven.
3. That many national and corporate leaders, who had banked on the born-again community for hope, trust and truthfulness to society and corporate culture have been disappointed.
4. That many pastors who own churches have become sharks living a luxurious life, comparable only to the Beverly hills kind of glamour enjoyed by Holly Wood stars.
Male's letter says Pastor Sserwadda and others now own homes with imported baths, jacuzzis from Dubai, and soup-to-dessert. The letter was partly in reaction to a sustained radio campaign on Sserwadda's radio Impact FM against born-again groups that are not organised under churches where he claimed that these groups were the ones bringing shame to the entire Pentecostal Movement.
Male continues to claim:
5. Top pastors who own churches were the the ones condoning immorality. The letter challenges Pastor sserwadda "Can you prove that you do not condone serial monogamy and marital breakage? Did you not sodomise the (Pastor) Imelda Namutebi's wedding with Kula, leaving Safina pregnant and with a child " and totally devastated? what gospel will you preach to Safina, her family and friends? - Imelda Namutebi is now a wealthy city pastor with large following).
He says that Sserwadda was also deeply involved in the second wedding of one Pastor Steven Ssozi of Gayaza a church on Gayaza Road, North of Kampala.
Thes pastors include:
* Pastor Patrick of a church along Entebbe Road who exploits women in counselling rooms and takes some home for sex.
* Pastor Grace of a big church in Rubaga Division who sodomisesd young men until they raised hell and complained to the National Council of Born Again Churches.
* Pastor Y of a church in Makindye is said to be a homosexual.
* Pastor L of a church along Entebbe Road variously accused of the same vice.
* Pastor O of Modern Pentecostal Church in Makindye division famed for sexual orgies, making women pregnant and afterwards encouraging them to abort.
7. The letter also attacks pastors who propagate the 'Prosperity Gospel' which emphasises the 'Mame it, Believe it, Take it.' Male says this gospel is responsible for wreking many peoples lives and breaking them financially and psychologically and making them to hate the 'gospel of salvation' altogether. Pastors involved in the 'Properity gospel include:
* Pastors Joseph, Isaac, Steven, Robert, Samuel, Imelda, Tom, Augustine, Simeon, and Godfrey.
8. The document also alleges that other pastors have conned Ugandans in million$ of shillings in visa fees, claiming that they would show them not only the way to heaven but also the way USA. Other accusations refer to acts of witchcraft, sodomy, misappropriation or diversion of donor funds.
Pastor sserwadda is yet to reply to the long letter from Male.
