The subject of False Teachers and Deception was a big issue to the early church that the leadership of the early church clearly addressed this issue with clarity and great concern and passion. At one time Paul the Apostle calls on those who preached ‘another gospel’ to be ‘accursed’. John the Apostle at a certain time called on Christians not to even ‘associate’ or ‘welcome’ those who taught heresies.
However, today many Christians in Christendom take the issue of deception lightly and yet at the same time many Christians who remain faithful to The Lord are awaking to the call to stand for Truth and are rejecting teachings of false teachers and preachers. Yes, many Christians are still bound in the deceptive teachings of false teachers even while many are awaking to Truth in Christ Jesus.
There are eternal consequences to simply following false and deceptive teachers who lead believers into deceptive ways. False Teachers, Preachers and Prophets have their reward in The Lake of Fire unless they repent and renounce their rebellion.
So, those who follow them and enable them certainly risk sharing the same reward that false preachers will get unless they repent. Just like the early Church, the subject of Deception and False Teachings inside Christendom today should be taken seriously by every Christian today.
John the apostle and Discernment…
Taking a look at John the Apostle and his writings concerning the subject of false teachers and deception even reveals more about how serious the early Church leadership looked at the issue of false teachers and deception in the church.
John the apostle not only gives us ‘physical-outward’ clues to help with our discernment but also deals with issues of the heart, as the heart itself can become deceptive and usually deception begins by capturing one’s heart into a state of self deception then the individual proceeds on to be drawn towards teachers who teach things that are ‘itching to the ears’…teachings that sound sweet to the ears…
Jeremiah 17:9-10John the apostle deals with the issue of discerning deception right from the heart. The Heart is very volatile to self deception and each and every one of us must guard our hearts against self deception. The Lord knows the false motives, evils and wickedness that wrestle to capture the hearts of many believers.
(9) The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
(10) I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
Even while we deal with ‘exposing’ false teachers and preachers, as believers and those engaged in the ‘Discernment’ Ministry, our hearts and Motives must be right before The Lord. From time to time we see John the apostle going back to the issues of the heart and warning about self deception.
The Self Deception of being Sinless…
1 John 1:6-10One of the first things that John the apostle deals with in exposing falsehood is in dealing with hypocrisy and the condition of our hearts before The Lord…
(6) If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
(7) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
(8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
(9) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
(10) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
If we say that we have fellowship with Him but walk in darkness, we lie and practice not the truth… This is something that we have to ask The Lord to help us with daily, that we walk in Light – the Light of The Lord…not just an outward practice to appease men but before The Lord…
Many False Teachers claim that they walk with The Lord yet they continuously Practice evil deeds and walk in darkness by practicing deeds that belong to the camp of the devil.
Yet John the apostle deals deeper with the heart that is susceptible to self deception by stating that if we say we have no sin, we deceive our selves and the Truth is not in us.
The issue is that no one is perfect and on this spiritual journey as we walk with The Lord, we are continuously being sanctified and perfected until the day The Lord returns. So, no one can claim they are without fault
Yet in humility we are to search our hearts on a daily basis and confess any failures. Mistakes and sins before The Lord, asking for His forgiveness, and asking that The Lord would grant us Grace and mercy to overcome any evil and not go back to the same old ways.
Those who claim that they have no sin make God a liar and God’s Truth is not in such folks… Self deception comes to deceive us into believing that we are OK spiritually yet many times our hearts are captured by evil. Paul the apostle warns us to examine our selves to see if we are still in the faith…
2 Corinthians 13:5Liars keep not the Commands of Jesus Christ…
(5) Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
1 John 2:4-6John the apostle points out clear that those who keep not the commands of Jesus Christ are liars. The issue of keeping to Sound Bible Doctrine is important and those so-called Christian Leaders who find that the Sound Bible Doctrine is not important and crucial to a Christian Life are liars and imposters.
(4) He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
(5) But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
(6) He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
I often hear some Christian Leaders claim that Sound Bible Doctrine is divisive and breaks unity and that those who stick to Sound Bible Doctrine are “not loving”…
Brethren, no not be deceived, if that Christian Leader hates Sound Bible Doctrine and will not keep to the sayings and teachings of Jesus Christ, flee from them, and flee that church…for such leaders are liars as the Bible clearly states.
Yet John the Apostle even takes this issue deeper by stating that if we abide in Him then we ought to walk even as Jesus Christ walked… This should be our daily prayer that The Lord will help us walk in His footsteps, that if there is any ‘Mentor’ it should be none but Jesus Christ Himself.
I often hear folks claiming to walk as a certain ‘Man of God’, yet Men are mere men and filled with failures. Why not follow after the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Why not allow The Lord to be your Mentor instead of following Men?
The Deception of Loving the world…
1 John 2:15-17One of the things that many False Teachers in the Prosperity Gospel Movement have done over the years is to deceive Christians that Loving the World is OK and they have encouraged Christians to love the world.
(15) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
(16) For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
(17) And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.
Yet John the apostle warns that those who love the world do not have the love of The Father in them. Do not be deceived by teachings from the Prosperity Gospel Camp, those who love the world and the things of the world have not the love of the Father in them.
The lust of the Flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life are not of The Father but of the World. Yet today we hear teachings on Christian TV promoting the Love of the World through messages like “Living your Best Life on Earth”. We hear messages like “Going to the Next Level of Influence”, messages that promote Pride of Life...and we hear messages about materialism that promote lust of the flesh.
Brethren, do not be deceived by such messages, they are NOT from The Father; such messages are from Satan the Prince of this World.
Yet still this is an issue of the heart, that we must examine our hearts daily in Light of God’s Holy Word that we do not be deceived by the love of the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and pride of life.
Liars continue not in the Truth of Jesus Christ…
1 John 2:18-22John the apostle gives a stunning warning that we are in the last days… Many deceived Christians and false preachers do not believe that we are in the last days and this is something that any discerning Christians must take a look at seriously.
(18) Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
(19) They went out from us, but they were not of us: for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
(20) But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
(21) I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.
(22) Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
John the apostle continues to warn us that as we are in the last days, many Antichrists are out there who seem to precede the Antichrist who is to come. The goal of these many Antichrists is to perpetuate deception and prepare the way for The Antichrist who will appear sometime in these last days to deceive the world.
The many Antichrists act as surrogates, enablers, and preparers of the way for their evil boss The Antichrist who will appear at a certain point in time during these last days.
Yet even more disturbing but yet revealing is that John the apostle points out that these ‘many’ antichrists begun in their walk inside the Church and they departed and forsook the way of Truth in Christ Jesus.
John the apostle clearly states that these false brethren – the ‘many Antichrists’ forsook the Way of The Truth and ‘went out from among us’ so as to be made manifest and shown that they are false.
But this ‘went out from among us’ has to do with departing from the teachings and doctrine of Jesus Christ and it is what Christians must watch for. Why are many Christian leaders departing from the Teachings of Jesus Christ? Why are many preachers today watering down the teachings and sayings of Jesus Christ?
The point is that we have ‘many Antichrists’ inside many churches teaching and preaching deceptive doctrines on many pulpits today and it will take bold Christian Leaders who remain faithful and loyal to the Teachings of Jesus Christ to expose such impostors on many pulpits in Christendom today.
Yet still John the apostle warns that these false teachers deny that Jesus is the Christ. This is important to watch for. These false teachers on the surface might confess that Jesus Christ is Lord yet they deny that Jesus is the Christ through their teachings.
Christ means Messiah, our Savior, Redeemer, and Deliverer. Yet many Teachings today have crept into the Church that makes Man supreme and self reliant rather than depend of the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ.
Eastern Religious Teachings are the foundation of many ‘Positive Thinking’ Teachings inside the Church today in which the false teachers claim that Man through his efforts of a Positive Thinking and Positive Confession can achieve some sort of victory and deliverance. The goal of the teachings is to make Man central in his quest for spirituality and while negating the True Teachings of Jesus Christ.
Many of these Eastern Religious Teachings simply see Jesus Christ as a mere Man and ‘another good prophet’ yet they reject the Messiah-ship of Jesus Christ, they reject The Christ.
Many books being sold in Christian Bookstores fall under this category, books that promote what self can do and not what Jesus Christ the Messiah can do in us. So, the scripture is much deeper than just a mere confessing that Jesus Christ is Lord…it is about those who deny and reject The Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Remember many false prophets confess that Jesus Christ is Lord yet they do not do the things that The Lord Commands – they do not obey the commands of Jesus Christ.
Matthew 7:21-23Lairs deny The Son – The Lordship of Jesus Christ…
(21) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
(22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
(23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
1 John 2:23As we have seen earlier in the study before, John the apostle warns us that liars and false teachers always deny The Son of God. As we saw, false teachers might make outward confessions that Jesus Christ is Lord yet not do the things that Jesus Christ commands. The very teachings of the False Teachers show their loyalty.
(23) Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.
It is in their teachings that they deny the Son-ship of Jesus Christ, they Deny that He is The Son of God, they deny and reject the Messiah-ship of Jesus Christ, and they reject the Authority of Jesus Christ and rather promote Man, Worship of Self, and Worship of the Works of Men.
Always such false teachers mix a little bit of truth with lies. Many Christians get deceived by such imposters simply because they “confess” that Jesus Christ is Lord…
Brethren, do not be deceived, just because such teachers say Lord, Lord and just because they write books and mention Jesus Christ does not mean they are true. Test and discern everything they say and write with The Teachings and Sayings of Jesus Christ – The Whole Counsel of God’s Word.
Liars and False Teachers Justify Sin and Evil…
1 John 3:7-8John the apostle gives us another clue in our discernment of false teachers and false brethren, that they practice not righteousness…they continue not in righteousness but they sin…
(7) Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
(8) He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Of course John the apostle is not contradicting himself with his earlier statement that anyone who says that they have no sin are liars and have no truth in them…
Rather in context with the whole letter of John, the apostle is stating that those who continue in sin and do not righteousness belong to the Devil’s camp.
In other words this is not about Christians who struggle with sin and temptation; it is not about Christians who cry before the Throne of Grace and Mercy asking Jesus Christ for help to overcome sin and temptation.
John the apostle is speaking about folks who have no remorse or any sense of conviction, folks whose conscience is seared and they care not about the sin but justify sin and evil. These are folks who have no repentance at all, yet we know that the goodness of The Lord leads to repentance.
However, for false teachers and other liars, they reject the goodness of The Lord that leads to repentance and instead engage in justifying sin and evil.
Sometimes false teachers will engage in justifying sin and evil… Today we have Christian Leaders and teachers in Christendom who justify the sin of Homosexuality, and Gay Marriage.
Many other sins such as Materialism, Adultery, and Divorce are being justified by many false teachers on many pulpits in Christian Churches across the world.
So, brethren, watch out that you do not be deceived by those who justify sin, even at times twisting scripture to justify the practice of sin in the Church.
Liars and False Teachers Hate True Christians…
1 John 3:9-12John the apostle points out clearly that those who are liars and false always sin.
(9) Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
(10) In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
(11) For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
(12) Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
1 John 3:15
(15) Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
1 John 4:20-21
(20) If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
(21) And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
As we stated earlier, John the apostle is not contradicting himself in stating that those born of God cannot sin… Yet in Chapter one John the apostle clearly states that those who say they have no sin are liars…
So, what is John the apostle talking about? As we saw earlier, when we take this scripture in full context of John the apostle’s letter, we see that this is not about those Christians who struggle to overcome sin and temptation but rather folks who have resigned to evil, have rejected the goodness of The Lord to repent, and have instead justified sin and evil, even at times using scriptures to do so.
However, what John the apostle does here is point out another sign of falsehood which is hate for the Brethren.
True Christians will love fellow True believers with the love of Jesus Christ. The Love of Jesus Christ should be our motivating factor rather than the flesh and pride of man.
Because False Teachers and Liars seek to promote Self and Man, they always will contradict with those whose motivation is the Love of Jesus Christ. The result is that the False and liars will always hate and persecute true believers.
We should ask The Lord daily that He will fill our hearts with His Love and Grace that we love the Brethren that He shed His Blood for…that our motivation will be His Love.
This is no call for compromise or false love and pseudo unity which withholds Truth from believers.
I know some Christians who claim that they cannot speak Truth especially when it comes to Sound Bible Doctrine because they “love the brethren”.
I know some Christian Leaders who will not confront Christians who continue sinning because they “don’t want to offend them” and that they “love them”… Such love is false and a pseudo love. The True Love of Jesus Christ rejoices in Truth and Not Evil.
You cannot claim to love your brother by simply letting him fall in a ditch while you seat and watch because trying to rescue him might “offend” him… You cannot claim to love your brother by letting him burn in his house, refusing to rescue him because your noise might “offend” him… Such actions and attitudes would be equal to murder and hate of your brother.
Don’t be deceived by the current Westernized Culture that hates confrontation and tough love against sin…a culture that hates to be confronted about sin and evil…a culture that always finds ways to justifies sin.
Only pray that your motivation will be The True Love of Jesus Christ…and that The Lord will fill your Heart with His Love…
Speak the Truth in Love and let the Holy Spirit convict and do His work in bringing men to repentance… Do not try to ‘make’ results… I have seen some brethren in the Discernment Ministry, especially in the Western world who engage in trying to force ‘results’…
They get frustrated just because no one responds to their messages and then when the frustration builds, they engage in the flesh and try to force people to repent and respond to their messages, then when they fail and frustration builds, they engage in ‘damning’ their listeners.
This is where the ‘damning’ of Christians in America ‘Teachings’ come from… Some Brethren get frustrated because some Christians are not responding to their messages and then they begin ‘prophesying’ doom and gloom to their listeners…they curse their listeners and write-off fellow Christians.
One brother was so frustrated that no one responded to his messages in the USA that he damned all Christians in America and claimed that God had told him that “God was done with the Gospel in America…that the Gospel had ended in America…”
Brethren, this ought not to be so… It is time that we mature in this Powerful Ministry of Discernment which is very vital for the Body of Christ in these last days…
We should ask The Lord for Grace, Patience, and His Love to fill our Hearts as we administer this wonderful gift of Discernment to the Body of Jesus Christ.
Test all Spirits – The Call for Discernment…
1 John 4:1-3John the apostle once again places emphasis on the need to Discern and test all Spirits if they are of The Lord or of Satan. John the apostle clearly states that many false prophets have gone out into the world and every true believer must be aware of this fact.
(1) Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
(2) Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
(3) And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Interestingly John the apostle writes about false prophets going out into the world almost about 2000 years ago. This calls for Christians today to be more vigilant and watchful with more earnest than Christians who lived 2000 years ago as deception has only increased more…
Yet many Christians take lightly the fact that many false prophets are out there inside Christendom and preaching on many pulpits in Christian churches today.
However, John the apostle reveals to us the deception that was sweeping the Roman Civilization insofar as Christianity was concerned…and that was that Jesus Christ did not come in the flesh and that Jesus Christ was some kind of illusion or myth…that there was no historical Jesus Christ.
This deception is still very present in our modern day institutions of higher learning. Many professors in elite Universities across the globe teach that Jesus Christ as we read about Him in the New Testament never existed.
The spirit behind such teachings is that of the Antichrist.
Yet even such teachings that deny that Jesus Christ came in the flesh and walked on this earth in flesh are find their ways on many pulpits in Christendom. Some Christians do not even believe that Jesus Christ rose from the Dead.
Yet still even in a more subtle way, many Christians claim to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord but deny His Teachings… They deny the Sayings and Doctrine of Jesus Christ and claim that Jesus Christ did not really mean what He said. Such Christians deny that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh – they deny the present Authority, Headship, and Presence of Jesus Christ in His Body today.
I recently attended an Evangelical Church in the USA and one of the Pastors was teaching about Matthew 5:29-30… This Pastor claimed that Jesus Christ did not really mean that Christians who hate their brethren could be in danger of Hell if they don’t repent… This Pastor of course was of the ‘Eternal Security’ persuasion and was twisting scripture to justify sin and evil and nullifying the responsibility of Man towards his actions…
Brethren, let us be careful and watch as many liars and deceivers are inside the Church…
Liars and False Teachers Speak of The World…
1 John 4:5-6John the apostle helps us in our discernment by giving us another clue here and that is that false teachers and liars always speak of the world simply because they are of the world.
(5) They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
(6) We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
I always marvel at the way preachers and teachers in the Prosperity Gospel Movement always speak about how to make it ‘big’ in the world, how to succeed in this world, how to live the best life in the world, and how to get to the ‘next level’ of success in this world.
Such preachers speak in such worldly terms because they belong to this world and therefore speak about how comfortably to live in this world.
Such preachers are not concerned about the spiritual walk with Jesus Christ. They are not concerned about Heavenly matters but they are much concerned about earthly things.
Secondly and importantly many of those who enable such false preachers will refuse to listen to truth because they have given themselves over to Satan’s camp and reject all truth.
Such folks have given themselves over to the Spirit of this world and therefore they gather teachers who teach doctrines of demons that sound good and itching to their ears…the very people that Paul the apostle warns about…
1 Timothy 4:1-2Also it is important to note that many false preachers are immensely popular and the world greatly listens to them. Yet John the apostle warns us that because they speak of the world, they are listened to greatly by the world.
(1) Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
(2) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
2 Timothy 4:2-4
(2) Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
(3) For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
(4) And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Just because some one is greatly popular does not mean that what they teach is right…this could very well be a sign of a false prophet especially if what they teach is basically how to love the world and live a very good comfortable life in this decaying world.
The whole world is under the sway of wickedness…
1 John 5:18-19For some time now but especially just after the 1999 Computer Y2K Bug scare, some Christians in the West were caught in a frenzy of ‘if to flee’ their current residents in the West to the Third World in order to escape the increasing immorality and sin in the Western World.
(18) We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
(19) And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
Many teachings such as the ‘Flee Physical Babylon’ Teachings centered on such notions were some Christians sought a utopia that was sinless and free of homosexuals, abortionists, and economic evils of Babylon so that The Lord would not judge Christians together with the Heathens. However, Christians who pushed for such moves like ‘Flee Physical Babylon’ were naïve and greatly ignorant of the evils and sins that were going on in the Third World.
It is of recent that the press has been exposing Homosexual Evangelical Pastors, and rampant Homosexual activity in Ugandan society for example, South Africa legislating Gay Marriage, and the UN sending thousands of textbooks to elementary schools in Africa teaching that Gay Marriages and Gay Sexual Orientation is OK and normal.
Africa and the rest of the Third World seemed to be adopting the Western Culture of Life and Ideology at a very fast pace with her increasing Middle Class.
Technology has also become a phenomenon success in Africa with Africa now surpassing America and Europe combined in Mobile Phone Subscriptions. Satellite and the Undersea Fiber Optic High Speed Internet Cable have turned Africa into a much more different place than it was just 10 years ago, bringing MTV, Hollywood, and the Liberal Western Culture to the Young Population of Africa.
What is happening has left the ‘Flee Physical Babylon’ camp without words and astonished and no where to flee as they realize that the whole world is under the sway of wickedness and the evil one.
Brethren, this is something that we need to realize, that the whole world seems to be converging towards the same spirit of the Antichrist. Sin and Evil will become normal and standard and Christians seen as ‘odd men out’, and if lucky as a minority…this is something that Christians in the West do not realize…
Liberalism is fast becoming the ‘New Normal’ allover the World… The implications for Christians are great but Jesus Christ Warned about such times long time ago.
Liars and False Teachers Abide not in the Doctrine of Christ…
2 John 1:7-11Lastly, John the apostle writes in his second letter to Christians about the need to continue in discernment. John the apostle warns Christians that many deceivers have entered into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh… These deceivers deny the existence of Jesus Christ through His Church on Earth.
(7) For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
(8) Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
(9) Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
(10) If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him Godspeed:
(11) For he that biddeth him Godspeed is partaker of his evil deeds.
We know that Jesus Christ physically ascended to Heaven and will return the second time but now lives through His Spirit in the Church – His Body today. This fact is distorted by false teachers who deny first of all that Jesus Christ even ever existed historically as many University Professors and Liberal Christian Leaders teach today.
Secondly, many of these false teachers deny the Teachings, Authority, Headship, and Presence of Jesus Christ in His Body – His Church today. They deny the fact that Jesus Christ is Head of His Body…
